Trying to keep up with the Halloween of things

Who else loves Halloween? I’ve always enjoyed dressing up. Growing up mom made so many costumes for me and Iove the idea of making my kids their costumes, I am still just plucking away at learning how to sew. So hopefully soon enough. This year though I gave it a go on sourcing out things to make my costume for Halloween. I decided to dress up as the Other Mother from Coraline.

Thrifting clothes is something I always have enjoyed and being able to re use or repurpose an item is something that think is important in this fast fashion era we are in.

So, I found my sweater, my shoes and oven mitt at GoodWill and ValueVillage. I washed and stripped them ( I use Tide, Oxyclean and Baking soda for this).

After this I started to layout the pattern for the oven mitt, I find it easier to trace it on paper (use paper that you will be discarding soon to make the pattern!), with a few tries I was well on my way to cutting the pattern on felt. I got my felt at Michaels, I find getting felt from there is pretty handy when you are only using a few inches for a craft, but of course if you need some more then definitely check out Fabricland, or if you know a local shop that has fabric go check them out at support local!

Anywho, I trace the shape I want, then I added half a centimeter to it on the felt where my hand stitches will go. The tricky part was attaching it to the mitt itself, I would recommend a quilters needle for this if you do something similar

Used some polyester filling I had at home to fill in the felt and all done! I mean it isn’t identical but you get the idea, and I was pretty happy when I was done.

Not all got done though!

So part of my costume was red sneakers and I thrifted white fabric ones from Value Village and got some Liquid Rit Dye from Fabricland. However, I completely miss placed the dye somewhere in our home and well, I wasnt going to buy another one or a pair of red sneakers just for the costume so I did without. I will eventually dye them tho and I will show you how that turns out later in the meantime here it is!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween.
